This specification is exclusive to heavy hex structural bolts. For variations in thread lengths with similar mechanical properties, see Specification A354 grade BD.ASTM A490 bolts must not undergo hot-dip galvanizing, mechanical deposition, or electroplating with zinc due to hydrogen embrittlement risks. Instead, they can be coated with Zinc/Aluminum Corrosion Protective Coatings as per ASTM F1136 Grade 3, known commercially as Geomet. Additional testing, including Magnetic Particle Inspection for Longitudinal Discontinuities and Transverse Cracks, is mandated by the A490 specification to ensure integrity.
