While A490 bolts share applications and dimensions with A325 heavy hex structural bolts, they surpass in strength due to their alloy steel composition as opposed to medium carbon steel. The specific A490 specification applies only to heavy hex structural bolts. For alternative thread lengths with similar mechanical properties, consider Specification A354 grade BD.ASTM A490 bolts are not to be coated with hot-dip galvanizing, mechanical deposition, or electroplating with zinc to prevent hydrogen embrittlement risks. However, ASTM has endorsed Zinc/Aluminum Corrosion Protective Coatings per ASTM F1136 Grade 3, known commercially as Geomet, for A490 bolts. Additionally, the A490 specification mandates rigorous Magnetic Particle Inspection to detect Longitudinal Discontinuities and Transverse Cracks.
