Ranging from 1/2″ to 1-1/2″ in diameter, and boasting a formidable minimum tensile strength of 150 ksi, these bolts are crafted for structural connections. A490 bolts closely resemble A325 heavy hex structural bolts, differing primarily in the use of alloy steel instead of medium carbon steel, thus offering a higher strength fastener. The A490 specification is restricted to heavy hex structural bolts. For bolts with distinct thread lengths yet similar mechanical properties, refer to Specification. A354 grade BD for further insights.Hot-dip galvanizing, mechanical deposition, or zinc electroplating are not permissible for ASTM A490 bolts due to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement. However, ASTM sanctioned Zinc/Aluminum Corrosion Protective Coatings per ASTM F1136 Grade 3, known commercially as Geomet, for A490 bolts. Additionally, Magnetic Particle Inspection for Longitudinal Discontinuities and Transverse Cracks is mandated under the A490 specification.
