Prior to its withdrawal in 2016, the renowned ASTM A490 specification was the standard for quenched and tempered, high-performance alloy steel. These heavy hex structural bolts are engineered for maximum strength and reliability. Ranging from 1/2″ to 1-1/2″ in diameter, these bolts boast a formidable minimum 150 ksi tensile strength. Designed specifically for structural connections, they feature shorter thread lengths than standard hex bolts. A490 bolts share applications and dimensions with A325 heavy hex structural bolts but stand out with their alloy steel composition, offering an enhanced strength fastener. The A490 specification is dedicated exclusively to heavy hex structural bolts. For bolts that require differing thread lengths but maintain similar mechanical properties, please see Specification A354 grade BD for alternatives.Important to note, ASTM A490 bolts should avoid coatings such as hot-dip galvanizing, mechanical deposition, or electroplating with zinc due to the possibility of hydrogen embrittlement. However, ASTM has sanctioned the use of Zinc/Aluminum Corrosion Protective Coatings as per ASTM F1136 Grade 3, commercially known as Geomet. Rigorous additional testing, including Magnetic Particle Inspection for Longitudinal Discontinuities and Transverse Cracks, is mandated by the A490 specification.
