These are robust heavy hex structural bolts, crafted for the utmost reliability. Ranging from 1/2″ to 1-1/2″ diameters, these bolts boast a remarkable minimum tensile strength of 150 ksi. Designed for structural connections, they feature shorter thread lengths, tailored specifically for these applications, unlike standard hex bolts. A490 bolts, crafted from superior alloy steel, offer higher strength compared to the A325 heavy hex structural bolts, made from medium carbon steel. These specifications apply exclusively to heavy hex structural bolts. For bolts with varied thread lengths yet similar mechanical properties, see Specification A354 grade BD. Notably, ASTM A490 bolts must not be coated via hot-dip galvanizing, mechanical deposition, or electroplating with zinc due to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement. However, ASTM allows coating these bolts with Zinc/Aluminum Corrosion Protective Coatings according to ASTM F1136 Grade 3, known commercially as Geomet. Furthermore, the A490 specification mandates additional Magnetic Particle Inspection for detecting longitudinal discontinuities and transverse cracks.
